Paige on an ATV

Paige on an ATV

We spent Christmas of 2005 in the Omaha, NE area visiting relatives. Among the many great times we had, was a chance to get out on Jim's new ATV's. The farm makes a great place to get out and explore with these great little machines. During the last visit I also gave several kids some rides, and Marna and I got out alone for a while as well. At the time Paige was still too little to even try and give a ride.

Now all of 27 pounds and 27 months, we decided to give it a try. Quite franlky, I wasn't sure if she would even tolerate the motor turning over. We're a very quiet household and Paige has always shied away from loud noises. Turns out that it wasn't too loud for her at all! Along with many other kids in our neighborhood back home, Paige rides around in little electrical toy cars all the time. This appeared to simply be an extension of that for her.

Since she was comfortable with the noise of the motor, we headed out to explore the farm. Again, this just seemed to be a natural extension of her little electric ATV. As we drove around we raised up bugs, and the swallows would swoop down in our general vicinity for the feast - almost dive-bombing the ATV. Paige got a kick out of the bugs that came up (especially the butterflies) and the birds.

When it was time to stop, Paige almost broke out into tears. We were able to calm her by distracting her with a trip to the pool ... and of course we had to go out again later in the evening. What I thought was funny though is that Paige would laugh when we went faster, sign "wind" as the breeze blew in her face, tell me to be careful as we drove up the crest of hills. Oh, and of course, Paige telling me to go faster when I was going too slow.

Life on Mars.

Life on Mars.

This image was taken during a recent "Shamal." Wind speeds were in excess of 50 miles per hour. The dust was so thick, seconds after walking outside, it felt as if I had finely packed grit in my eye sockets. For two days after the storm ended, I coughed up Earth-colored phlegm. It's impossible to escape the dust without a filtered breathing apparatus. While the Army was forced to carry such, civilians were out-of-luck. I was left covering my face with a T-shirt every time I went outside.

Due to the poor air quality, and length of the storm, my fire alarm in my room began going off unpredictably. Every few minutes, it would shriek at me, reminding me of the apocalyptic scene playing out beyond the confines of my room.

In a small way, it reminded me of my life in Utah. During the winter months, blizzards would wreak havoc on our streets, blanketing everything in a blissful, white veil. Beautiful, silent, clean, and cold. But the parallels are few, and unpleasant. As if I were scraping ice and snow from my car on a cold, winter morning, I would have to wipe inches of powdery, red dust off my truck's windshield. Gone was the silent purity of snow; replaced with it howling wind and dust wishing to penetrate everything in its path.

I could end this by saying how thankful I am to not have been born here, but that goes without saying. This place literally is hell on Earth. Violence, religious fundamentalism, honor-killings, bombs, deaths, destruction. . . heat, and dust. To say I'm "thankful" to not have been born here is an understatement.
